Exporting to Iran: The Challenges

On 16 January 2016, the United Nations sanctions on Iran were lifted, as were many of the sanctions imposed by the European Union. . UNSC resolution 2231 (2015) remains in place despite the decision by the United States to withdraw from the JPCOA on 8 May 2018.

Intellectual property protection

Under Iranian law, registration is important in order to protect intellectual property

Dispute resolution

Iranian Law provides access to dispute resolution and arbitration in cases of dispute between foreign investors and companies and the Iranian Government. Businesses are recommended to first settle disputes amicably through negotiation, and should no settlement be reached the matter can be referred to the Iranian courts. Disputes can also submit their claims to arbitration proceedings.

Non-tariff barriers

Indirect taxes such as value added tax (VAT) is a set rate per goods, ranging from three to 10 per cent and some goods may be subject to double taxation if also required from the country of origin. In 2015 it is set that VAT is going to increase by one per cent to generate more revenue for the country.

There is a variety of items which are exempt from taxes being imported into Iran, some popular items are:

  • unprocessed agricultural products
  • flour, bread, sugar, rice, milk, cheese
  • machinery
  • livestock and animals
  • feedstock and pesticides.

Iran currently has free trade zones which avoid the non-tariff barriers such as value added services (VAT). These specialised economic zones have been established to provide:

  • ۱۰۰ per cent foreign ownership
  • flexible monetary control
  • no entry visa required
  • ۲۰ years tax exemption.
